Trump Presidency: What Will Happen to Health Care?

Saint Louis, MO, USA – March 11, 2016: Donald Trump talks to supporters at the Peabody Opera House in Downtown Saint Louis.

Republicans have wanted to repeal Obamacare since 2010, but with president elect Trump about to take office, they might finally get their way. If so, the changes could mean that 22 million Americans would go without health insurance, according to an estimate from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office.

With so many proposed changes to current policy by president elect Donald Trump, what will it mean to health care?

Here is the seven-point plan president elect Trump intents to use to reshape the U.S. healthcare system.

  1. Completely Repeal Obamacare. This change would mean that no American citizen would be required by law to purchase health insurance.
  2. Modify Existing Law That Inhibits Insurance Sale. Allowing full competition in the insurance market would drop costs and increase customer satisfaction.
  3. Allow People to Deduct Premiums From Tax Returns. Individuals would be able to fully deduct health insurance premium payments on their tax returns.
  4. Allow Individuals to Use Health Savings Accounts (HSAs). Contributions to HSAs will be tax-free and able to accumulate. Accounts could be used without penalty by any family member.
  5. Require Price Transparency. All healthcare providers, clinics and hospitals will be required to offer complete transparency about pricing so that consumers can shop around, and find the best price.
  6. Block Grant Medicaid to the States. States will be offered incentives to eliminate fraudulent activity, waste and abuse.
  7. Remove Barriers to Entry. Consumers will be able to access safe and dependable drugs imported from overseas. This reduces special interests of the pharmaceutical industry.

What about mental health?

When it comes to mental health, Trump has stated that he aims to reform mental health programs and institutions in the U.S. This will provide families with the ability to gain the information and tools they need to help themselves and their loved ones suffering from any mental health issues. Additionally, Trump has stated that changes in the health care system will address veteran’s needs specifically.

The promises of Obamacare reform still need bipartisan support, but republicans won’t get to repeal the Affordable Care Act without a supermajority vote in the Senate (60+ votes). It would require that many votes to give the Republican government the power to repeal the health law, but it may not be enough to completely replace them. Will they get the 60 votes needed to make the changes? Only time will tell.

Did you know an addiction can be caused by a mental disorder?

One of the primary reasons that mental disorders and substance abuse so often go hand-in-hand is that drugs and alcohol can provide an escape from the pressures of mental health problems. Self-medicating is surprisingly common: you’re not alone.

But unlike real, effective, long-term solutions, such as medication and detoxification in a treatment center, drugs and alcohol won’t amount to effective treatment.
