There are ways to improve your quality of life every single day

Approximately 350 million adults around the world suffer from some form of depression. Fifty percent of Americans with signs of major depression do not seek treatment for their mental illness, and this is overall toxic to a person’s mental, emotional and physical wellbeing.

You do not have to simply live with your depression looming over your head. Depression can be combated implementing simple steps in your daily life to get your mind back on track and ready to fight back.

Exercise more

Don’t know where to start when it comes to decreasing your continual sadness, anxiety or even overall numbness? It’s time to get moving. Get active. Take a walk around the block or take your dog to the park. You don’t have to start running marathons to reap the mental benefits of exercise. Being active for just 20 minutes a day five times per week has been scientifically proven to improve your emotional state. Getting out and staying active will prevent you from isolating yourself, which those who suffer from depression tend to sway towards.

Engage in social activities

The phrase ‘fake it until you make it’ has its benefits when dealing with depression. Forcing yourself to socialize with loved ones may ease your mental anguish and bring you some happiness. Pry yourself outside of your comfort zone; join a new fitness class or follow through with an obligation to meet an old friend for coffee. Try a new recipe you found online. Silence the inner voice telling you that you should keep to yourself and lay in bed all day. Putting yourself out there may boost your mood and improve your mental and emotional outlook. Still not feeling up to anything and don’t know where to turn? Try seeing a therapist or speaking to a health professional you trust. Seeking help does not show weakness or defeat – it simply means you are ready to take your life back.

Meditation can mean something different for everyone. You don’t have to sit cross-legged with your eyes closed for prolonged periods of time. Meditation is simply the art of being mindful – being aware of your surroundings and paying special attention to your thoughts and your physical self. Some people use walking or writing in a journal as a form of meditation. Find an activity that helps you to exist in the present and makes you aware of what you are thinking and how you are feeling. This can help you deal with your emotions and clear your head of negative thoughts.

The cost of depression annually – due to health care costs and lost productivity – is high. Depression can be mentally, emotionally and physically exhausting, but you don’t have to allow it to control your life. You can take small steps to make a big impact on your mental health. It all starts with wanting to make a change and taking a stand against depression, once and for all.

Did you know an addiction can be caused by a mental disorder?

One of the primary reasons that mental disorders and substance abuse so often go hand-in-hand is that drugs and alcohol can provide an escape from the pressures of mental health problems. Self-medicating is surprisingly common: you’re not alone.

But unlike real, effective, long-term solutions, such as medication and detoxification in a treatment center, drugs and alcohol won’t amount to effective treatment.
