RR SMOKING DURING PREGNANCY 2016 1

Many health problems and ailments that children face upon birth are due to the mother’s actions and decisions throughout the nine-month process of pregnancy.

One of the worst and well-known life habits that can completely debilitate the future of a child is a mother who smokes during pregnancy. The influences of smoking during pregnancy can be tragic, and in some cases lethal.

On top of the potential health problems, the child is also at an increased risk of becoming a substance abuser and addict themselves.

The studies of influence

In recent years, scientists have been able to draw connections between children born under the influence of mothers who smoked during pregnancy. For the child, the environment and treatment in the prenatal process influenced the genetic traits can cause the child to indirectly be drawn to that culture and environment. The area of focus that is affected due to smoking is known as the ventral striatum.

In recent studies, it has been shown that children exposed to smoking in the prenatal process were heavily affected in comparison to those children that were not.

To demonstrate this, a study published in the journal Translational Psychiatry concluded that, “In prenatally exposed adolescents, we observed a weaker response in the ventral striatum,” furthermore, “the weaker responsivity of the ventral striatum to reward anticipation in prenatally exposed adolescents may represent a risk factor for substance use and development of addiction later in life.”

What one can put together from this study is that there is a direct connection between smoking and addiction for the child in the future. This project puts forth the truth towards epigenetically influences as a child’s genes morph according to environmental changes and risk.

From influence to growth

With so many studies over the past 10 years researching this area, it is clear that there is a direct connection between prenatal smoking and those children who become addicts themselves. In this, it’s clear that a child under those conditions faces an increased risk of becoming an addict, on top of the risk of health problems.

Did you know an addiction can be caused by a mental disorder?

One of the primary reasons that mental disorders and substance abuse so often go hand-in-hand is that drugs and alcohol can provide an escape from the pressures of mental health problems. Self-medicating is surprisingly common: you’re not alone.

But unlike real, effective, long-term solutions, such as medication and detoxification in a treatment center, drugs and alcohol won’t amount to effective treatment.
