People hardly believe that popular icons can face depression, but that is exactly what seems to happen with most if not all of them at one point in time. Popular movie star Ryan Phillippe is no exception here. In a recent interview with PEOPLE, Phillippe opened up on his struggles with his emotions. He notes how he had to deal with his fame, his family and his personal struggles – factors that greatly weighed him down and caused him to be severely depressed.

Phillippe notes that he had decided to withdraw from acting to focus on caring for the people who matter most in his life: his children. With some of the children becoming teenagers, old enough for him to concentrate on something else, Phillippe says he’s happy to engage in acting again. The movie star was referring to his decision to return to the screens with America’s new hit show Shooter.

What is probably most important with Phillippe is the fact that he’s been able to find a way to deal with his stress. He notes that he is “a lot more at peace” now than when he was younger.  “I struggled much more with depression when I was in my 20s and 30s. I think the amount of reading that I’ve done the work on myself and the ways that I’ve found to cope are healthier than when I was younger,” Phillippe says.

Ryan Phillippe is certain that his positive result is due to the fact that he’s more careful and considerate about the choices he makes. He notes that he’s careful with the feelings he expresses and does everything possible to sure of where such feelings originate.

But how did Phillippe cope with his anxiety? He’s learned to not let gossip get to him. He notes that he’s faced every manner of gossip; he doesn’t take them seriously anymore. He continues that he’s not nearly as dark a person as he used to be or as at the mercy of his emotions.

“There is a sensitivity that will never change and an empathy that will never change, but how you deal with those feelings and where you let them take you, that’s an individualistic journey for anyone who struggles.” Phillippe notes.

If the movie icon can deal with depression, you too can. Perhaps it’s time to look down low on the gossips people make about you. People will always talk, but if you have a clear mind, whatever they say shouldn’t really bother you. If you try this, you would go a long way to handle any episode of depression that may come your way.

Did you know an addiction can be caused by a mental disorder?

One of the primary reasons that mental disorders and substance abuse so often go hand-in-hand is that drugs and alcohol can provide an escape from the pressures of mental health problems. Self-medicating is surprisingly common: you’re not alone.

But unlike real, effective, long-term solutions, such as medication and detoxification in a treatment center, drugs and alcohol won’t amount to effective treatment.
