As addiction worsens over time, those around the affected individual have to suffer from their frustrating and frightening behavior.

In a study published in the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs, for example, nearly half of participants who had or were currently dealing with alcohol use disorder got divorced at some point in their lives.

For many struggling with addiction, the road to recovery can be really difficult and challenging as it involves getting their life back on track and mending strained relationships.

If you are determined, nothing in this world is impossible. Here are a few suggestions for repairing relationships after addiction.

Reconciling  and apologizing

The first step to repair broken relationships is to reconcile with your partner or friends and expressing to them how sorry you are for your behavior. It not only helps you in rekindling your relationships but also helps in lessening all the regret, guilt and shame. It is not an easy step to overcome, but surely the first step in restoring your strained relationships.


The damage done by addiction may be too severe to fix, and your friends or family may have too much contempt and feels hurt enough that they find it very hard to forgive you. Anger, denial, fear are very common reactions that one has to face from their loved ones after recovery.

So, patience is the next requirement to the lead of repairing strained relationships. You can never expect to be welcomed by your friends and family after your addiction negatively affected them. You just have to increase your patience and give them time.

Building trust

The most important thing to repair relationships after addiction is re-establishing trust within your loved ones. Remember: it takes time. Even if you are putting in all your effort, it won’t be repaired over night. It is vital to show your family that you are being honest and consistent. Your way of thinking, a perspective of life and way of living life has to change to show the people around you that you are genuinely trying.

Focus on being a better you

For repairing relationships, you first have to repair yourself:

  •    Build a routine and stick to it
  •    Counseling really helps in motivation of recovery
  •    Accept opportunities.

It is important to know that every relationship cannot be saved or get back to the same as before, because it is obvious that you cannot change what happened or forget the hurt and anger. You just have to work on the unresolved issues and the problems that your addiction caused your relationships but it will surely take from both sides.

Accept responsibilities and most importantly learn to listen, maybe someday your actions will fully convince your loved ones, just never give up! Respect your relationships and make them your top priority and in return, they’ll help you rebuild a part of yourself which has been lost.
