Have you ever wondered what could cause a person to feel worthless? Sometimes, it just gets difficult coping with life. We may feel so bad about ourselves that nothing seems to be right anymore. It could be that the people around you; the ones you love abandoned you in a difficult situation. It could also be they criticize and feel bad about themselves often, and you learned to do that to yourself from them.

In any case, feeling worthless is a difficult situation. It causes the victim to lose their self-esteem and eventually become depressed. So what exactly makes a person feel worthless?

Growing up in discontent

Renowned journalist Anneli Rufus had to deal with hating herself for over 40 years. In her book Unworthy: How to Stop Hating Yourself,Rufus writes, “I hated myself unreservedly, as if it was required.”

She did not do anything wrong to undergo this predicament. Rather, as a child, her mother made her believe that something was terribly wrong with her. As such, she did not want to be herself; she hated whom she was.

Like Rufus, the people you grew up with might have made you live your life wanting to be anyone else but yourself. If that is the case, you will tend to feel worthless at some points in your life. Brooke Lewis, a registered clinical counselor specialized in self-harm, eating disorders and addictions in British Columbia, notes that, “When we do not see worth in something, we often treat it poorly.” Lewis notes that the principle is true for self-worth. He notes that if you face such circumstances, you will absolutely believe that you are not “worth caring for.”

Failing in life

One of the major factors that will make you feel completely worthless is failing to live up to expectations. If you come from a successful family for example and everyone but you is succeeding in life, you could feel worthless very often. The thought of bearing the shame being the only failure in the family could make you feel very worthless.

Losing a close friend or relative

The death of someone close to you could trigger worthlessness. In that case, life seems to get worthless and useless without the person. As time passes by though, the general tendency is that the individual learns to accept the loss and begins to feel better. Occasional instances of worthlessness may still pop up though, whenever the victim thinks of the one he/she lost.

Worthlessness could have devastating effects on the victim. They could withdraw from his/her relationship, become an alcohol or drug addict, voice out emotional frustration and even develop suicidal thoughts. It is absolutely necessary to for therapeutic assistance as soon as such feelings develop in a human.

Did you know an addiction can also be caused by a mental disorder?

One of the primary reasons that mental disorders and substance abuse so often go hand-in-hand is that drugs and alcohol can provide an escape from the pressures of mental health problems. Self-medicating is surprisingly common: you’re not alone.

But unlike real, effective, long-term solutions, such as medication and detoxification in a treatment center, drugs and alcohol won’t amount to effective treatment.
