GAGE SKIDMORE/FLICKR – FLICKR.COM

It is an interesting story about Carrie Fisher’s bipolar disorder, which can inspire many people suffering from bipolar or other mental disorders

Bipolar disorder is a common form of psychological disorder with mood swings of both depressive episodes and manic episodes. It also can be associated with other disorders like drug or alcohol abuse and psychosis symptoms in the form of hallucinations and delusions.

Fisher was diagnosed with the disorder when she was 24. Like many other patients, she didn’t accept that fact until she became 28 years old, when she had an overdose. She explained that she finally accepted it as there was nothing else to do or no other way to explain the feelings.

Fisher describes her experience with group therapy that helped her along her way. Alcoholics Anonymous helped her find company with similar people who had the courage to talk about it and make fun of it. It was hard in the beginning, like anything else but this was especially hard as she didn’t like the idea, plus the people were not the perfect match as they also have mental health issues.

Interestingly, Fisher describes her unusual feeling of doing something that she didn’t like. She just had to be there and try to adapt to get through her difficult times and feelings  even if she didn’t like it. Eventually, she was brave to accept it. Meeting with such people is an opportunity to share experience, to give and to help others who might have similar situation.

Carrie Fisher has final advice to never give up even if you are not doing something you like. It is easier to give up and let everything go and feel hopeless but you can do it. She will be supportive all the way, especially to others who are dealing with bipolar disorder in their everyday lives.

Did you know an addiction can be caused by a mental disorder?

One of the primary reasons that mental disorders and substance abuse so often go hand-in-hand is that drugs and alcohol can provide an escape from the pressures of mental health problems. Self-medicating is surprisingly common: you’re not alone.

But unlike real, effective, long-term solutions, such as medication and detoxification in a treatment center, drugs and alcohol won’t amount to effective treatment.

If you suspect that your loved one is suffering from addiction, then take our free 3 minute assessment.
