We have all heard the expression, “I have been to hell and back”

Well, I have been to the pits of hell and back and have lived to tell the tale. It wasn’t supposed to be that way, or was it? It didn’t have to happen that way or, did it? I am endeavoring to share my story with you in an open and honest way that hopefully, will help to inspire you to embrace your life’s challenges, knowing that greater does come later.

In the late Spring of 1988, my life almost ended and as a result, I was forever changed. That is when early one morning, after smoking cocaine for nearly twenty-hours straight, I lay helplessly on the floor in my mother’s basement convulsing and clinging to life. Suddenly, a voice clearly spoke to me and told me that this is how my life was going to end and that this is how people are going to remember me. I was going to be remembered as a junkie who died at the age of twenty-four in the basement with a crack pipe in his hand. In that split second, after hearing that voice, which I believe was Divine in nature, I made a decision to live and God spared my life. The compulsion to use drugs and alcohol that had enslaved me and had destroyed my transition into adulthood was finally gone and thus, began my process of my entering into recovery and my climbing the stairway leading “From the Basement to The Upper Room.”
