Here are 5 Things You Can Do to Be a Better Person

Time, of course, is always the limiting factor

Becoming a better person is usually at the top of most people’s lists, as who doesn’t want to leave a lasting impression or legacy on the world? The process of analyzing our own behaviors, the good and the bad, and really reflecting on the effects they produced as a result, gives us a prime opportunity to learn, reconsider what could be improved, and grow.

Our actions and habits so often take a certain consciousness and awareness that most of us would probably say we don’t have time for.

The truth is that in order to make the most of yourself, optimize your gifts, and give back to the world, you have to nourish yourself first. Being a better person ultimately means giving kindness, time and compassion to every person and every moment. Here are small actions you can take to start the year off in the right direction:

You Need Help?

We invite you to take our test – and determine whether or not you’ve got an issue. If you do, read on, and consider contacting us to guide you through steering your life back to normal.

1. Journal

Keep a journal and record three things you are grateful for. Then record three things you would like to accomplish in that day.

2. Change your attitude

Shift your mentality so you are in control of every piece of your life. Instead of replaying things and unfortunate life events that have happened to you, focus on your next move in overcoming whatever problem exists. Ultimately, you decide whether or not you want to be in the presence of any person or situation.

3. Spread kindness

Be generous; give when you can. This means with love, time, money, food, etc. This means forgiveness, volunteering, providing a listening ear, hosting dinner parties, etc.  When you begin to think in terms of abundance and realize life is not a zero sum game, you put yourself in a position to receive even more back.

4. Be honest

Be honest with yourself and those around you about where you are in life. No one has a perfect situation; everyone is fighting their way through their own challenges. When you remove the weight of having to live up to certain expectations, you give yourself liberty to do things at your own pace without social pressures. In the process, you will discover that everyone is too busy focused on their own lives to pay attention to you in the first place.

5. Take care of yourself

Save time for physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual nourishment.

  • Physical:
Beneficial eating, exercising, and resting
  • Social/Emotional:
Making social and meaningful connections with others
  • Mental:
Learning, reading, writing, and teaching
  • Spiritual:
pending time in nature, expanding spiritual self through meditation, music, art, prayer, or service

Did you know an addiction can be caused by a mental disorder?

One of the primary reasons that mental disorders and substance abuse so often go hand-in-hand is that drugs and alcohol can provide an escape from the pressures of mental health problems. Self-medicating is surprisingly common: you’re not alone.

But unlike real, effective, long-term solutions, such as medication and detoxification in a treatment center, drugs and alcohol won’t amount to effective treatment.
